Pan-Arctic suitable habitat model for Greenland halibut

چکیده

Abstract Deep-sea marine fishes support important fisheries but estimates of their distributions are often incomplete as the data behind them may reflect fishing practices, access rights, or political boundaries, rather than actual geographic distributions. We use a simple suitable habitat model based on bottom depth, temperature, and salinity to estimate potential distribution Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides). A large presence-only dataset is examined using multivariate kernel densities define environmental envelopes, which we link spatial pan-Arctic oceanographic model. Occurrences generally fit well, although there were gaps in predicted circum-Arctic likely due limited survey activity many ice-covered seas around Arctic Ocean. Bottom temperature depth major factors defining observations, other factors, such ecosystem interactions larval drift could also influence distribution. Model predictions can be tested by increasing sampling effort poorly explored regions studying connectivity putative populations. While abundances High currently low, some areas for this species, suggesting that on-going sea-ice melt lead expansion into new areas.

The Northeast Greenland Shelf as a Potential Habitat for the Northeast Arctic Cod

Observations (1978–1991) of distributions of pelagic juvenile Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua L.) show that up to 1/3 of the year class are dispersed off the continental shelf and into the deep Norwegian Sea while on the way from the spring-spawning areas along the Norwegian coast to the autumn-settlement areas in the Barents Sea. The fate of this variable fraction of pelagic juveniles off-s...

Linking juvenile habitat utilization to population dynamics of California halibut

We investigated the nursery role of four coastal ecosystems for the California halibut (Paralichthys californicus) using the following metrics: (1) contribution in producing the fish that advance to older age classes, (2) connectivity of coastal systems resulting from migration of fish from juvenile to subadult habitats, and (3) effect of nursery habitat usage and availability on subadult popul...

Pan-Arctic distributions of continental runoff in the Arctic Ocean

Continental runoff is a major source of freshwater, nutrients and terrigenous material to the Arctic Ocean. As such, it influences water column stratification, light attenuation, surface heating, gas exchange, biological productivity and carbon sequestration. Increasing river discharge and thawing permafrost suggest that the impacts of continental runoff on these processes are changing. Here, a...
